  The Route Of The Bull

The Route of the Bull by Douglas Scott

Jerez de la Frontera it is the largest city in the province of Cadiz. It is Spain's capital for Horse breeding and a destination for horse-lovers from all over the world. It can be found in the south-western corner of Andalucia, on the banks of the river Guadalete and just a short drive from both the Atlantic beaches and the Gaditana mountain range.

The most important economic sectors are the wine industry, retailer trade, tourism, and dry land agriculture. It also forms part of both the Route of the Bull and the Wine Route. It has the fifth largest population of Andalusian cities. Over thirty two thousand hours of sunshine shine every year in the city.

The region of Jerez as its name states, only produces sherry. Jerez is one of the oldest recognized Denominaciones de Origen in Spain, covering an area of approximately 16,000 hectares.

The restaurants to be found in Jerez, highly appreciated having developed in quality over recent years, offer cuisine of the highest level.

It is pleasant to walk around the city, much of which is pedestrianised. The main shopping streets are located between Plaza Romero Martinez and Plaza del Arenal. Local products and ancient crafts can be found such as barrel-making, wicker work, items related to wine or flamenco and saddling.

Jerez holds world wide acclaim for its sherry and brandy production. It nightlife consists of traditional tapas bars, street cafes, all night discos and some wonderful local fiestas. Practically every street in the city is packed with bars, cafes and restaurants. Plaza Mina in the centre and Calle De Manuel Rances are among the liveliest places.

From Jerez you have the choice of going to the beach resorts.

In September it is a celebration of the grape harvest, with a programme of events flamenco music related to wine, Andalucian horses and gastronomy. The show opens with a grape treading demonstration and firework display, With several weeks of free out door concerts and entertainments. There are also music and flamenco events both in doors and out, food and wine sampling, a gala at the Royal School of Equestrian Art.

The city is equally famous for its fine horses. The Royal Andalucian School of Equestrian Art is famous for its dancing horse shows, typical of Jerez, where the famous Andalucian thoroughbreds are trained to perform high precision ballet dances to music. The school trains horses and riders in dressage.
